Photo: Watson Staring

So we've started taking pictures with our new digital SLR camera. We're still learning, but the sheer quality of these photos compared to the point-and-shoot variety are great.

I'll be posting a subset of the pics I share on Flickr. Here's one of Watson, one of our cats, looking kind of miffed, perhaps because we're giving a treat to one of our other cats and not him?

I'd love to hear more about what you think, been holding out on getting a DSLR for quite some time because of how much larger they are than a point&shoot. Do you have a photography knowledge to fine tune all the settings, or are you just finding the quality go up by virtue of it being an SLR?

They're not good for "put it in your pocket, take some pics on a whim at a party" kind of shots. But the quality and post-shot-tweaking capabilities are more so than point and shoot.

So if you're out to take photos (traveling, etc.) then DSLR has more potential. If you're just living life and want to be more serendipitous, then I think point-and-shoot has its advantages.

Digital aside, the SLR/change lens aspect means you can do a lot more with the camera (telephoto, depth-of-field effects, opening the shutter a long time at night, etc.)
